THE ROMAN BATH
A JOURNEY THROUGH 2000 YEARS
WHERE ANCIENT HEALING MEETS MODERN LUXURY
Hidden in the foothills of Mount Belasica, just 12 kilometers from Strumica, lies one of the best-preserved Roman thermal baths in the Balkans — a place where 2,000 years of history meet the soothing power of geothermal water. Welcome to Bansko, home of the legendary Roman Bath, and the heart of a story waiting to be lived.
WHERE ANCIENT HEALING MEETS MODERN LUXURY
The story begins with the Parilo spring, a powerful natural thermal source erupting from the depths of the earth at 72°C, rich in rare minerals, untouched by surface air, and flowing with a force of over 40 liters per second. Its healing waters have been used since the 1st century AD, first by local Macedonian tribes and later by the Romans — not just for bathing, but for spiritual rituals, healing, and devotion. Ancient coins found around the spring, dating from the 4th century BCE to the 3rd century CE, reveal that pilgrims came from afar — not only to heal, but to pray, make offerings, and seek peace.

A MONUMENT OF ROMAN ENGINEERING
Excavated in 1978, the Roman Bath in Bansko remains one of the most extraordinary ancient spa complexes in Macedonia. With its eleven distinct rooms, including thermal pools, saunas, dressing chambers, and massage areas — this 632m² structure rivals modern spa resorts in design and purpose.
Among its highlights:
-
A grand hot water pool of 93m², complete with original Roman basins and fountains
-
Three sauna rooms, heated by geothermal steam
-
Cold water immersion tubs and relaxation chambers
-
A sophisticated hypocaust system — the Roman version of underfloor heating, powered by the steam of Parilo
-
Two temples dedicated to Aphrodite and Hermes, with statues and inscriptions preserved to this day
A marble pedestal discovered on-site reads:
“Valeria Dionike, the High Priestess, dedicates this statue to Hermes.”
